The most important thing about making the classic BLT (bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich) is using the best possible ingredients.

In many recipes, lesser quality ingredients can be covered up by other ingredients and flavors, but not in this one. Each ingredient shines and later summer is the perfect time of year to make this American favorite.
Tomatoes: If you don't have a garden full of produce, your best bet is to head to the farmers market like I did. So much great, fresh produce this time of the year. Just make sure the stand you purchase from is growing the food locally. Some vendors actually import product to sell in these markets. Thankfully the farm I purchase from above is less than 50 miles from Chicago and has some of the most delicious fruits and vegetables. Select a great tomato, and slice it medium-thick and lightly salt and pepper it.
Bacon is obviously a key ingredient and this requires you select the best, medium-thick cut you can find. Costco carries a tasty thicker cut bacon and of course Nueske's bacon from Wisconsin (but available in stores nationwide and also via online purchase) is about the best you can get. If you have a local farmer that makes their own bacon, it's probably great too. Try it out. You can prepare the bacon in the microwave or make the entire package like I do, by using the oven fried technique. Make it good and crispy. What you don't use for the sandwich, refrigerate in an air tight container with paper towels between the slices.

Bread: You might think the type of bread you use doesn't matter, but I do think it does. I prefer an Italian style medium-sliced bread, which is toasted lightly. You may find good local bakeries and I encourage you to look. Otherwise, select a good quality national brand like Turano. I keep a loaf of their Pane Turano Italian Bread in my freezer at all times. It's quick to thaw in the toaster and comes in handy for a panini or whenever else I need a good, tasty, crusty bread. Whatever bread you choose, toast it lightly.
Lettuce and Mayo: The sandwich is assembled and finished off with a piece of green leaf lettuce and a slather of your favorite mayonnaise. Some prefer Kraft Salad Dressing and if that's what you grew up with, feel free to use it.
