This cheeseburger pasta recipe is made to approximate the Hamburger Helper Cheeseburger Macaroni box mix. When you don't want all of the processed ingredients found in the original, this recipe provides you with a simple ingredient list which is also easily prepared in a skillet or Dutch Oven.
Now you might say it's easier to just make the box mix. But as you will see below, I don't think it is. The list of ingredients is simple and you can make it all in one skillet just like the original. And when you read the label on the original Hamburger Helper Cheeseburger Macaroni, I think you'll agree that the ingredient list below is far better for you and your family.
This recipe is adapted from Cook's Country. It's not my most favorite pasta recipe, but it is certainly popular with children. There is no doubt your kids will love it too.
Note that the recipe below can be prepared in a 12-inch non-stick skillet. When I need a larger batch I make it in my Dutch Oven. You can use any shape of macaroni, although elbow macaroni is the traditional choice.
Cheeseburger Macaroni
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 large yellow onion, finely chopped
12 ounces (3 cups) macaroni
2 1/2 cups chicken broth
1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon dry mustard
salt and pepper
6 ounces chopped deli American cheese
dried parsely for garnish
Instructions
Over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef. Add in half of the chopped onion and stir to combine and cook for 2-3 minutes until the onion softens.
Add the brother tomoato sauce, Worcestershire, mustard 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper and the dry macaroni. Stir to combine. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer stirring occassionally, until macaroni is tender, about 8-10 minutes. Stir in the remaining chopped onion, taste and add more salt or pepper as needed. Place in serving bowl and garnish with parsely.
